PLAN THE FUTURE!

Architecture and urbanism have always been arts of forecasting. "To design" - to propose in advance - and "to project" - to display that vision - are used in architecture and urbanism not in a figurative way, but they describe concrete operational techniques.

The challenges of modern societies, no matter how abstract or virtual they may seem at first glance, are ultimately concrete spatial challenges that affect the widest part of our lives and require long-term attention. Attention from those who are still planning their future.

The Faculty of Architecture at the University of Ljubljana is one of the regional centres for studying this art/technique. You are invited to visit us at this year's Information Days on February 16 and 17!

EDUCATIONAL PROCESS

Key concepts at our faculty include creativity, collaboration, and co-creation. Knowledge is conveyed through joint work in vertical seminars, within which one of the most important subjects – Design Studio - takes place. The course is integrated throughout the study process and focuses on fostering independence and creativity in students (aspiring urbanists and architects alike) while also utilising knowledge gained from other coursework.

Study groups are formed for project work, comprising students from different years who, under the guidance of professors and assistants, design their initial projects in architecture and urbanism.

An important part of our studies is the cooperation and integration of students from different years. This is how skills and knowledge can be best shared between generations of future spatial designers.

Last but not least, group work fosters strong professional and personal connections that last a lifetime. After all, a lot of time during the studies is spent collaborating in drafting rooms. Professional networking is additionally enhanced through workshops organised both at home and abroad, as well as during informal gatherings on professional excursions, which are another important part of the study curriculum.

STUDY PROGRAMMES

The Faculty of Architecture offers two different study programmes.

Architecture is a single master’s study programme (EMŠA) that lasts 5 years. Once you have successfully completed your studies and defended your master’s thesis, you will receive the title “Master of Architecture”.

The urbanism programme is divided into two Bologna cycles. The first-cycle university programme lasts 3 years, and after completing your thesis, you will receive the title of “Bachelor of Architecture and Urbanism”. The second-cycle master’s study programme takes an additional 2 years, and after successfully defending your master’s thesis, you will receive the title “Master of Architecture and Urbanism”.

Transferring between the two programmes is possible. Students may transfer between programmes by passing differential exams. It is also possible to enroll in the second level of urbanism studies with a completed first level of another Bologna program, upon passing the differential exams.

UL FA also offers existing graduates an opportunity to further develop their education. You may continue your in-depth research on topics from the fields of architecture and urbanism by pursuing a doctoral degree.

WHAT KINDS OF PROJECTS AND THEMES WILL WE ENCOUNTER?

You will cover a wide range of topics related to the state of space, society and ideas for its future development.

In addition to the regular curriculum, which is available on our website, the faculty offers a variety of short-term spatial planning projects each year, such as week-long and month-long workshops, organised in cooperation with local communities, municipalities, and other domestic or foreign faculties/universities. These events allow participants to apply their knowledge in a realistic and comprehensive manner. At the same time, these projects offer many students their first opportunity to present their own ideas and contribute to the benefit of certain communities.

At the turn of each year, the faculty is transformed into a public gallery; its seminars, lecture halls, even corridors, brim with our students’ reflections, projects and installations. It is here that students can see the results of their colleagues’ projects, and in turn present their own to others, including the general public. Every year we also organise collaborations with various important municipal institutions, i.e. the Museum of Architecture and Design, the Kresija Gallery, the Cankar Hall, and others, where students use their projects and workshops to raise awareness as to the culture and state of space.

CAPABILITY TEST FOR SINGLE-CYCLE (5 YEARS) MASTER STUDY PROGRAMME ARCHITECTURE (EMŠA)

Candidates who wish to enrol in the Single-Cycle Master Study Programme Architecture (EMŠA) must pass the Architecture Studies Capability Test. This exam is mandatory both for candidates enrolling in their first year of studies, as well as for candidates enrolling in a higher year as per the programme transferring criteria or accelerated advancement criteria. The test comprises two parts. The first is an exam of artistic and spatial talents, consisting of two exercises, and includes an assessment of the student’s ability for abstract thought. The second part of the test consists of a candidate interview; here, we evaluate the candidate’s interests, motives, social and cultural awareness, resolve, character, their connection to architecture, and finally, their critical evaluation and knowledge of the architectural environment.

Date of the capability test in the 1st application period: Wednesday, July 3, 2024. Candidates will receive an invitation to the capability test via email to the address provided when submitting their application in the eVŠ system.

CAPABILITY TEST FOR CANDIDATES ENROLLING IN A HIGHER YEAR BASED ON TRANSFERRING CRITERIA

The capability test for candidates enrolling in a higher year based on transferring criteria consists of two parts:

  • Evaluation of the candidate's personal portfolio, which includes their own representative study assignments from their previous studies from which the candidate is transferring.
  • An interview with the candidate, aimed at revealing their interests, motives, awareness, vitality, personal characteristics, connection with architecture, and critical knowledge and evaluation of the architectural environment.

CAPABILITY TEST FOR FIRST-CYCLE UNIVERSITY STUDY PROGRAMME URBANISM (UŠU)

Informativni dnevi - Preizkus sposobnosti za UŠ urbanizem

Candidates who wish to enrol in the First-Cycle University Study Programme Urbanism (UŠU) must also pass a capability test. The test comprises two parts: a textual-graphic examination and an interview. The test assesses the candidate’s abilities of spatial comprehension and expression, their aptitude for spatial organisation and development, their analytical reasoning, cooperativeness in group settings, as well as leadership qualities and communication skills. The test is carried out anonymously. The interview is a mix of general questions pertaining to spatial comprehension, aptitude for spatial arrangements, motivation in terms of solving problems in urban and non-urban spatial development, awareness of developmental challenges in modern society in relation to settlements and the environment, empathy, and ethical principles.

Date of the capability test in the 1st application period: Thursday, July 4, 2024. Candidates will receive an invitation to the aptitude test via email to the address provided when submitting their application in the eVŠ system.
